I have been thinking about July 4th differently this year.
Two hundred and fifty years. I learned that number in school the same way everyone did — a fact, a date, a chapter in a textbook. It did not feel personal. It did not feel like it had anything to do with me specifically.
Then my daughter enlisted - and now it feels like everything.
When Someone You Love Wears the Uniform
Because here is what changes when someone you love puts on a uniform: history stops being abstract. You stop reading about sacrifice and start living adjacent to it. You stop seeing the flag as a symbol and start seeing it as something your kid is actively choosing to stand under — every single day, far from home, in places you are not allowed to know the details of.
Two Hundred and Fifty Years of Military Families
Two hundred and fifty years of that. Generation after generation of families exactly like ours — proud and terrified, figuring it out, holding it together in public and falling apart in the car. Sending their kids, spouse, brother, or sister off and trusting something bigger than themselves to bring them home.
We are not the first. We will not be the last. On July 4th this year, when the fireworks go off and the crowds gather and everyone celebrates — I will be thinking about every family who ever stood exactly where we are standing.
What America's 250th Means to Me
That is what 250 means to me. Not a party. A lineage. A long, unbroken line of people who showed up anyway.
